Hotel Parties: What are they Really?

Hotel events and takeovers can be a great way to get away for a night or a few days, escape the realities of homelife and tie in some awesome travel all at the same time. They can also be a great way to meet a lot of people in a sensual, fun, energetic setting.

There are also some common traps and pitfalls for these events, we are going to explore everything about hotel events in this blog.

But what are they really?

Hotel events can be set up into 3 main camps, a full takeover, floor takeover or ‘other’. Let’s explore these in more detail.

Full Takeover (AKA a hotel buyout)

This is where the event organizer has contracted exclusive use of the hotel and all amenities for the sole purpose of hosting their party. The parties could be overnight or could be 2-5 nights long, they would have arranged entertainment, security, DJ’s, playrooms and more often that not they may contain some kind of edutainment (like seminars and sessions focused on being sex positive).

These events tend to be a bigger commitment both financially (ticket prices, theme outfits and airfares) and time wise (time of work, away from family and pets) so my advice is to make sure you are booking one that suits your style.

There is an event out there for everyone!

Some of the positive things about a multi day full takeover is the ability to connect with likeminded people over multiple days (perfect if you need a sensual build up), full privacy and curated mingle events with opportunities to meet and mingle.

Floor Takeover

This might be where the event organizer has arranged all the rooms on a certain floor of the hotel (or multiple floors). This means that you will be mingling with other people in the public areas (lobby, lift and so forth) and are expected to dress and act appropriately when transiting through the hotel.

The host might arrange for a maximum number of guests to stay on the takeover floors and extra rooms could be used as ad hoc play areas. Some event organizers will arrange door decoration parties, room crawls (like a pub crawl but drinks in room to room).

Financially, these are a relatively low investment, you can BYOB (bring your own booze), most people will be local instead of flying in from another city & since these types of events are generally a 1-night affair, you do not need too many outfit changes for the themed events.

These events can feel cliquey at times and can be difficult to foster a decent connection with others unless you are good at moving from chat to the bedroom.

Other

Other events at hotels might include a hotel room party, a conference room party for 1 night of dancing and fun OR a pool party takeover like our friends PlayhouseLV do out in Vegas. They are generally lower cost and therefore less investment if the party turns out to be a dud.

So how do you spot a ‘GOOD’ event?

The age-old question (not really, I just like saying that) is where do we spend our time and money to get the most out of our journey?

It is a tough question to answer, firstly make sure you are booking an event that has a similar style to you. If you are into BDSM for example, you might want to book an event that has this in the schedule, classes and of course other attendees that enjoy similar things.

Here are a few other things to consider and questions to ask the host: –

  • Is this their first party? Have they held other events before?
  • Do they have security, insurance, and privacy?
  • Has the hotel and all contractors been briefed on the ‘type’ of party this is?
  • Do they have a schedule or plans to have mingle events?
  • How can you engage with the attendees before the event? Do they have a membership site and does it cost extra money?
  • Are there any hidden costs like pool chairs, VIP areas etc?
  • Are there theme nights?
  • What are their COVID protocols (this one is for you 2020!)

Some event organizers take their jobs very seriously and will have thought through things like code of conduct and privacy, others are more laissez faire with their arrangements. Pick an event and event host that matches your style.

Other things to consider.

Is the event Nude, Clothing Optional Or Topless?

This is important if you are wanting a certain type of atmosphere and to help you understand the boundaries of the event. If a host has arranged a topless pool then please respect this and do not go nude, the host has likely contracted this into the arrangement with the hotel and thus you should be mindful not to disrupt the relationship with the hotel.

Are hotel events Cliquey?

Some people say YES ABSOLUTELY to this question, I’m personally on the fence. Could they be? Absolutely but so could any event, club, meet and greet. It’s up to the host and the attendees to break down any potential barriers to create a fun environment for everyone. If you feel like an event was too cliquey then vote with your feet and go somewhere else.

Common pitfalls and ways to f**k up your event

Trust me, I’ve done most (read all) of these things, its never fun to walk away from an event with a feeling that you aren’t completely satisfied.

  • FOMO; trying to go to every single thing on the schedule and then being burned out by day 2
  • Drinking too much; especially on day 1 is a really common mistake and you’ll regret it the next day when you wake up at noon, hungover and wishing you had bacon and eggs in your bed….
  • Not making connections; there is nothing worse than walking away and feeling like you didn’t come out of your shell and make connections. Set yourself a small goal if you are a little introverted, make an effort to talk to at least 2-3 new people a day & attend all and every mingle opportunity the host arranges.
  • Not being prepared; not feeling sexy in your skin? Don’t have your outfits sorted? Didn’t bring a sexy room set up? These are a lot of ways to not be prepared, check out my 9 Practical Tips for Attending Large Swinger Events
  • Arriving day of or departing too early the next morning; we have flown out from Mexico at 6am the day of our departure after we have stayed up until 2am partying. It is NOT pretty! Book your flights and hotel days to give yourself some downtime.

At the end of the day, it’s the people that make the party! When you are hanging out with your tribe it doesn’t matter what little things go wrong. It’s the job of the event organizer to foster an environment for you, but it’s the attendees that will make or break a good event.

We would love to hear your stories about hotel parties you’ve attended, times when you’ve gotten it oh so wrong and times when you’ve gotten it O SO RIGHT!
